Events
Alberta’s weaving community hosts three different types of events throughout the year.
Open weaves do not have an instructor present and are free to attend. You can bring your own materials or coordinate with the host beforehand, and they can provide you with materials for a small gathering fee.
Workshops are led by experienced instructors, and materials are included in the price. Most workshops range between $90 (half day) to $425 (multi-day).
Retreats span several days and are centred on either a series of workshops or one larger project. They can include catered meals and accommodations, or access to camping.

Brittany Haduck is taking the lead on organizing our next Weaving Connections, and could use a few helping hands to get things growing. Whether you have experience organizing events, connections within your community, or simply a little time and enthusiasm to offer, there are plenty of ways to get involved. You don't need to take on a big role to make a difference — even one small piece of the puzzle would be appreciated. Brittany is also looking for a new home for the gathering. The wish list: room for four to six workshops running at once with eight to twenty people in each, and the elbow room that willow whips six to eight feet long need; a kitchen a caterer could work in; sleeping quarters or a heated indoor space for tents; somewhere for vendors; and an open space to sit and weave together. It is a wish list, not a list of requirements. Somewhere wonderful that ticks only a few of these boxes is still worth hearing about. Brittany has also put together a survey, Weaving Connections Feedback and Future Planning, on what has worked and where the gathering should go next. You do not need to have attended before — the first question asks, and it takes you from there. It runs anywhere from five minutes to three quarters of an hour, depending on how much you have to say. Weaving Connections has traditionally been held on the second weekend of March. Depending on the venue, those dates may shift.

Ashley is looking for a mentor, or simply a connection, in the Edmonton and Sherwood Park area. She has taken a couple of classes this year, at Weaving Connections and at Baskets in the Garden, and it feels like a craft she has a natural affinity for. She would like to deepen her knowledge of all things basketry — willow selection and harvesting as much as the weaving itself. Any connections in the area would be greatly appreciated. Get in touch with the guild and we will pass your name on.
